The sun was just setting; several rays of light could still be spotted over the edge of the horizon, painting the darkening sky brilliant shades of purple and orange. Their fading light pierced through even the branches of the towering owl tree, where a pair of amber eyes stared out at the world, cold and unblinking. A breeze picked up, ruffling the fur of the one concealed in the tree, but the stare did not waver. Even the indignant hoot of an owl, who had just awoken to find an intruder in its home, was not enough to faze this strange outsider. But, as the last streams of sunlight dimmed to nothing, the gaze finally broke.
A dark brown tom emerged from the shadows and carefully scaled the tree until he reached the ground. For a moment, he just stood at the base of the tree and glanced at his surroundings. It's been quite a while since I've been in this area, he thought, taking in the familiar ThunderClan scent, I wonder if anyone's missed me. He turned his gaze in the direction of RiverClan territory. There it is, home sweet home; so close, yet so far away. I would have payed a visit last time I was in the area, if it wasn't for that self-righteous ginger tom. He sniffed. Ah well, that smug pile of fox dung got what was coming to him. I wonder if sister was terribly mad? I do think that tom was her mate. His lips twitched. Well, nothing we can do about it now.
He stood, prepared to head into RiverClan territory when a twig snapped behind him, freezing him between steps. I think someone's there. He turned; a gentle wind caressed his face, and he parted his lips to taste the scent carried on the air. Definitely feline, definitely ThunderClan. Hmm, seems like this day may be interesting after all. He sat, his pose both relaxed and poised. Well, let's see who it is.
